• Masdevallia mendozae, orchid species, orange flowers. Rare. Masdevallia mendozae is rather easy in cultivation and one of the most heat-tolerant species, besides that it has very unusual flowers – orange or yellow tubes that resemble macaroni pasta. Pollinated by hummingbirds, who are attracted to the tubular form and vivid color, seeking nectar; the form ensures accurate pickup of pollinia by the bird.

 • Psychopsis Mendenhall ‘Hildos’, FCC/AOS, orchid hybrid of Butterfly x papilio, bred by
Carter & Holmes 1988, aka Oncidium.
Psychopsis Mendenhall was first created through the hybridization efforts of Carter and Holmes Orchids and was registered in 1988. It is a hybrid between Psychopsis Butterfly (sanderae x papilio made by Ruben in Orchids, 1969) and Psychopsis papilio. The clone ‘Monarch’ was given an Award of Merit by the American Orchid Society. This particular clone is vigorous, with wide thick leaves that have a slight purple mottling on the edges and tips. The wide leaves give evidence that this clone may be a tetraploid. The butterfly-like flowers are large and can be 5 to 6 inches in size. The spikes are from 2 to 3 feet in height and can produce flowers for several years. This plant is easy to grow and flower. Pollinator: Possibly male butterflies, performing pseudo-copulation; possibly insects that parasitize butterflies. But no one knows for sure.
